2 students battle brain injuries at SMHS hospital

Iqra’s classmates could not stop crying when they heard that she had suffered hemorrhage. “What did she do to be hit like that?” they asked. Iqra is a resident of Rajouri Kadal here.

In the Neurosurgery Ward of the SMHS Hospital, Iqra is writhing in pain. Dressed in her college uniform and surrounded by a few classmates and family members, doctors prepare this critically-injured student for a surgery. “She has a contusion (hemorrhage) on the left side of her brain. Her skull is fractured,” a doctor said.
Iqra, 17, a B.Com 1st Year student, was hit by a “big stone” at Sekidafar Chowk here while she, along with her college mates, was out on the street protesting the recent police action on students of Government Degree College, Pulwama.

“We were marching peacefully, but she fell down suddenly and we saw a stone had hit her. The forces personnel, at a distance, had shot the stone with a catapult,” a classmate of Iqra alleged. The fall of Iqra to ground also caused an injury to her leg that doctors suspected to be a case of fracture.
Iqra’s classmates could not stop crying when they heard that she had suffered hemorrhage. “What did she do to be hit like that?” they asked. Iqra is a resident of Rajouri Kadal here.
Her aunt tried to console Iqra’s mother while frantically asking doctors whether the girl would be alright. She said Iqra’s father, a coppersmith, was devastated by the news.
“He has four daughters and Iqra is the meekest of them all,” she said, while Iqra’s father looked on, numb with anxiety.
Almost at the same time when Iqra was being prepared for the surgery, the CT Scan of a teenage student, Basit Khurshid, revealed that a pellet had penetrated into his skill through the upper side of his left eye. His right eye was “leaking blood and aqueous humor”, said a doctor, adding that his chest was pockmarked by pellets. His right eye had been punctured by three pellets.
Doctors said pellets had “badly damaged” the right eye of Basit, a 19-year old student from Bonigam, Shopian.
“The CT Scan shows a pellet lodged in his skull. It seems to have caused some brain damage. We are assessing the extent of the injury,” they said. Basit, according to his family, was injured at Shopian when he and many of his cousins were preparing for a marriage ceremony. “They were caught in the midst of clashes between the students and the government forces,” a relative of Basit said, while doctors took him inside the Trauma Theatre for surgery. Ophthalmologists at the hospital said they would have to wait till Basit stabilizes and then they would attempt repairing his eye. “Primary repair has been done,” they said, while getting busy to evaluate eye injuries of other students brought to the hospital.
Among them is Umar Majid, a 25-year-old Srinagar youth. “He also has an injury in the orbit of his right eye,” said a doctor.
Hospital authorities said that four students with pellet injuries to eyes were admitted to SMHS hospital on Monday. “Most injured were managed in the districts only. Those with grave injuries have been brought here,” an official from hospital administration said.
