Major Leetul Gogoi, officer who tied Kashmiri man to army jeep, honoured for counter-insurgency ops

Major Leetul Gogoi, who had tied a man to a jeep in Kashmir purportedly as a shield against stone pelters, has been honoured with the Army chief’s ‘Commendation Card’ for his ‘sustained efforts’ in counter-insurgency operations.

The award for Major Gogoi is seen as a backing of the action of the officer belonging to the 53 Rashtriya Rifles even as the Army maintained that a court of inquiry (CoI)into the incident is “under finalization”.

All factors including notable performance of Major Gogoi and “overall emerging indicators” of the Court of Inquiry, have been “well-considered” while conferring the award on him, Army sources said, in clear indication of the Army’s support to his prompt decision to tie the man purportedly to protect soldiers from stone-throwers.

Its now a question , are solders their to protect themselves or civilians. This also throws a though, if in case of a war like situation is army allowed to use human shield to protect themselves. An army which is well equipment with ammunition and arms does not have a means to protect themselves when thousands of pellets are showered on regular basis on protesters blinding hundreds already. There are lot of question to be asked as how the people of Kashmir react to the award giving situation when thousands of cases of human rights abuse are still pending against army patrolling the streets of Kashmir.
